Premise: From the 1950’s to the 1980-90’s, the US underwent major changes in the
social constructs that define the nation. There were major policy changes and
legal decisions that greatly affected the nature of social expectations and in
some instances, educational expectations. Looking at that time period, and the
state of education , discuss the following using the Spring text, Freire, A
Nation at Risk, and the current rhetoric about education : • Explain some of
the changes that have occurred as a result of the Civil Rights movement. •
Describe how those changes have manifested in our current situation. • If the
purpose of education is to MAINTAIN society, how has the growth of the US
helped or hindered that? • If the purpose of education is to PROGRESS society,
how has the growth of the US helped or hindered that? • What changes still need
to take place to address the inequalities that manifest in educational systems?
